经典民谣“Streets of London”是英国歌手Ralph McTell 1969年的作品。McTell从雷德贝利（Leadbelly）、伍迪葛士瑞（Woody Guthrie）、劳勃强森（Robert Johnson）等民歌与蓝调先驱人物的作品中得到启发。在英国与欧洲流浪了几年之后，他返回伦敦，在苏活区的一些民歌俱乐部卖唱。
　
1969年，他在第二张个人专辑《Spiral Staircase》里面发表了自己谱写的“Streets of London”，不过当时并未受到重视，后来，他在1974年底重新录制这首歌，结果夺下英国排行亚军，就此成名。
　
在德国，这首歌创下同时有四个版本在排行榜上的情形（他自己的版本就占了三个）。受到极高的评价，几乎相当于「英国的鲍布狄伦（Bob Dylan）」，成为英国、欧洲、甚至美国许多民歌手学习的榜样， 　
“Streets of London”更是他毕生最具有代表性的经典，翻唱的人至少超过两百位，比如资深英国老牌歌手罗杰惠特克（Roger Whittaker），布鲁斯史宾斯汀（Bruce Springs），Sinead O'Connor（西尼德·玛丽·伯纳黛特·奥康娜）与艾瑞莎富兰克琳（Aretha Franklin），以及亚洲演艺界殿堂级巨星张国荣（Leslie Cheung）等等。

谱写这首歌的时候才二十四岁的麦可泰尔，是根据自己流浪多年的经历，以及在伦敦卖唱民歌的感受，而激发灵感的。这正是他想对一些自怨自艾、认为自己孤独寂寞的人说的话。（网络整理）
